Prospect Park Police say big rig Truckzillas unable to fit under the Route 420 bridge are navigating alternate neighborhood streets badly, creating damage along the way.
“I’ve been living here for decades, and it happens way too often,” said Debbie Melbourne.
The police are working to get control of these ‘Truckzillas,’ writes Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.
“Warnings are a thing of the past,” said Chief Dave Madonna. “We can’t have these large trucks driving through our tiny roads, disrupting people’s peace.”
On Tuesday, a Felix Transport tractor-trailer on 14th and Fletcher was too big for the neighborhood street and shredded a lawn before hitting an electric pole on 9th and Pennsylvania.
Special equipment was needed to move one truck after it got stuck at 3rd and Pennsylvania last week.
When truckers can’t make it under the bridge, drivers try to cut through neighborhood streets instead of finding a safe truck route, Madonna said.
“I don’t know if they’re not using truck-specific GPS, what the case may be, but we are not a cut-through town for these trucks,” said Madonna.
The police promise thousands of dollars in heavy fines going forward, and possible state police intervention to get the trucks properly inspected.
