The West Whiteland Township Planning Commission is still not ready to advance the Exton Square Mall redevelopment project over traffic and open space concerns, writes Noah Zucker for BISNOW.
Abrams Realty & Development had previously amended its master plan for the ailing shopping center, but Tuesday’s meeting indicated the changes were insufficient.
The meeting ended with a vote that, if approved, would have advanced the project to the township’s board of supervisors for review.
However, the vote did not go in the developer’s favor. Residents and township officials raised concerns about the proposed density, open space, traffic impacts, and economic foundation.
“Everybody wants to see something happen there,” said Rajesh Kumbhardare, the Planning Commission’s board of supervisors liaison. “We have to answer to our residents and the concerns they bring us.”
Abrams plans a mixed-use project with hundreds of apartments, dozens of townhomes, and new retail. The developer’s lawyer, Marc Kaplin, noted some requested changes could imperil the project.
“Please don’t push us to the point where this does not work,” he said. “Let us build it. This is as good as it gets.”
