Scott Sauer, who has served as interim general manager for SEPTA since November 2024, has been promoted as the transit authority’s permanent general manager, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.
Sauer was named interim general manager after his predecessor Leslie Richards stepped down from the role in late 2024 after nearly five years.
His career with SEPTA started in 1990 as a trolley driver.
Over the past six months, he has helped lead the agency through various challenges, particularly a budget crisis.
“I am confident that he is the best person to guide SEPTA through these challenging times ahead,” said SEPTA board chair Scott E. Lawrence in a statement.
SEPTA is currently facing a $213 million operating deficit. This will become a further reality if state lawmakers can’t agree on a deal in this year’s budget for new SEPTA funding.
If this happens, SEPTA would cut service by 20 percent by late August and increase fares by 21.5 percent starting September 1.
For Sauer, in addition to advocating for more funding, he will stress safety, customer service, and reliability in his new permanent role.
