Philly’s Career and Technical Education Program Helps High School Grads Transition to Workforce

The School District's career technical education program provides students with intensive hands-on instruction in 48 different career paths.

The School District of Philadelphia’s career technical education program students recently celebrated their graduation.

While some graduates citywide are enjoying their summer vacation or preparing for college, others are already in the workforce thanks to the program, writes Chris O’Connell for FOX 29.

This is true for Adryanna Day.

Within two days of graduating from Randolph Technical High School, the Mount Airy native was already working full-time as an apprentice mechanic with the City of Philadelphia Department of Fleet Services.

However, through the program she actually started her career as a sophomore.

Fidel Rodriguez is another graduate of the program.

Two days after his graduation, he was working at an auto body repair shop.

“It prepares you to go into a field with a trade on hand already,” Rodriguez said about the program.

The career technical education program provides students with intensive hands-on instruction in 48 different career paths.

Some of the other fields include health technology, culinary arts, construction, and more.

More than 200 students have gotten direct pipeline careers immediately out of high school as a result of the program.

Despite the jobs, both Day and Rodriguez both plan to attend college with their career visions already in place.
