In Yardley, a wise-looking owl sculpture carved from a tree stump has recently appeared, catching the eye of many passing drivers, writes Peg Quann for the Bucks County Herald.

Cindy and Lampros Fatsis, who commissioned Ukrainian-born sculptor Viacheslav Kuzema to transform the nine-foot stump in their front yard into a work of art, will be very happy if the owl becomes a new landmark for the Bucks County town.

“Creating art to us is really important,” said Cindy, “to bring people together, to bring joy.”

They learned about the artist through word of mouth. Kuzema immigrated to the United States seven years ago and has since turned several tree stumps into sculptures throughout the Philadelphia region. He even did some work in Virginia.

While many believed the couple chose an owl because of its association with Temple University and its mascot, that was actually not the case. Instead, their decision was inspired by the flat top of the stump, which reminded them of the shape of an owl’s head so it seemed like the natural fit.

“It’s really awesome,” said Bill Bowers, of Yardley, as he passed by the sculpture. “It’s so cool.”
