Wawa Tackles I-81 Virginia Corridor in Latest Store Expansion

Wawa plans to open 60 stores in western Virginia, focusing on the I-81 corridor.

Those who use I-81 to travel south into Virginia and beyond will appreciate Wawa’s expansion of 60 stores along that corridor in western Virginia in the next 10 years, writes Diane Adam for CSP Daily News.

Wawa is excited to enter the I-81 region, a key north-south freight route in Virginia off of Interstate 81.

“Wawa has been part of the Virginia community for more than 25 years and is proud to be expanding further west to the I-81 region,” said Kim Dowgielewicz, director for store operations for Wawa. “We are thrilled to continue growing in new markets to provide the community with our one-of-a-kind offer and commitment to supporting the community.”

Wawa is continuing to search out and finalize details for sites currently under contract in the region.

Each store requires an investment of about $7.5 million and employs, on average, 140 contractors and local partners.

The stores will employ 35 associates and create “thousands of long-term new jobs,” the company said.

Wawa’s also pushing into Georgia in the next five to eight years, with plans to build and open more than 26 stores in the state, at a rate of three to four stores per year.
