Villanova University Merging With a Financially-Struggling Rosemont College

Villanova University is merging with Rosemont College starting in 2027.

Villanova University is merging with another financially-struggling Catholic college even as it transforms the recently-acquired Cabrini University, writes Susan Snyder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Rosemont College in Rosemont will merge with Villanova University in Radnor beginning in 2027, with the merger complete in 2028, according to Rosemont officials.

“We are committed to securing the best possible options for our students, faculty, and staff and believe this merger with Villanova offers the best opportunity to ensure that the Rosemont College history and legacy endures,” Rosemont President Jim Cawley said.

This will be the second Catholic college to close in the region in a relatively short time. Cabrini closed its doors last May after Villanova purchased the campus.

The Rosemont campus will become Villanova University, Rosemont Campus.

Rosemont, with 774 students, was one of 13 area colleges deemed in poor financial health by the Inquirer when it examined the colleges last fall.

Villanova and Rosemont traditionally have close ties, with students sharing some classes and programs.

Students currently enrolled will have until June 2028 to complete their Rosemont degrees. After that, they will have the option of transferring to Villanova’s School of Professional Studies.

No new students will be accepted after September 2025.
