As Philadelphia prepares to host 2026 FIFA World Cup matches next year, the city is already setting its sights on the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The United States, along with other members of the Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football, currently represents the only bid to host the tournament six years from now. A successful bid would mark the nation’s fifth time that it is hosting a World Cup — three times for women and twice for men.
During a recent meeting of the City Council’s Committee on Legislative Oversight, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Gregg Caren said he told FIFA President Gianni Infantino during last week’s visit to the city that Philadelphia would “wonderfully welcome” the 2031 Women’s World Cup.
He added that if the city were to bid for the tournament, it would need financial and other support from both public and private institutions, similar to what was provided for the 2026 Men’s World Cup.
“All we need is the same level of support we’ve had from the public sector, and hopefully the same level of support from the private sector,” said Caren.
