Fabric Health Helps Philadelphians Access Health Care, Other Social Services by Reaching Them Where They Are

Fabric Health helps Philadelphians access health care and social services by reaching them in places they already frequent, like laundromats.

Fabric Health helps Philadelphians access health care and social services by reaching them in places they already frequent, like laundromats, writes Nicole Leonard for WHYY.

Originally launched in Philadelphia four years ago and now based in Washington, D.C., the company has expanded to multiple cities. Its mission aligns with state efforts to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates in Pennsylvania by improving access to crucial services for women and families including health care, food assistance, and transportation.

One of the common challenges faced by families when trying to access health care and other services is a lack of time to navigate the complex system of social services.

Fabric Health outreach workers aim to help them overcome that challenge, helping people recertify their Medicaid insurance coverage, enroll in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and apply for assistance in paying their energy bills.

They also teach people about using their benefits, including emphasizing the importance of getting annual physicals, preventative health care and prenatal care.

“Something that we are really focused on is getting mom or expecting mom the care that she needs early and even when she’s not sick,” said Olivia Pecora, an operations specialist with Fabric Health.
