With many department store giants, including Macy’s and JCPenney, closing stores during the years-long retail apocalypse, Boscov’s has stayed afloat and expanded, writes Noah Zucker for Bisnow.
Now, the Exton Square Mall location of the nation’s largest family-owned department store chain is set to outlast the rest of the shopping center as the new owner plans to replace it with a walkable, mixed-use town center.
“I hate to use the word dead mall, but it’s a dead mall,” said Peter Abrams, owner of Abrams Realty & Development, which recently finalized the purchase of the property from PREIT. “Boscov’s is becoming the last man standing.”
Abrams will demolish most of Exton Square and build a new Main Street behind the store, connecting apartments, restaurants, and more.
Boscov’s CEO is unfazed by the changes.
“Traffic comes through the Boscov’s doors, not necessarily the mall’s doors,” said Jim Boscov. “Whatever they do, it’s going to be okay for us.”
