With March Madness just days away, college basketball fans are preparing for what will surely be an entertaining tournament, writes John S. Kiernan for WalletHub.
In the lead-up to the annual basketball tournament, WalletHub has released a ranking of the top U.S. cities for NCAA basketball fans and Philadelphia is firmly in the top two.
Among the main reasons is because Philadelphia has the most Division I NCAA teams in the nation at 6. Those teams are Temple, University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, Saint Joseph’s, La Salle, and Villanova.
The teams have also been rather successful over the years.
“Philadelphia teams have the most regular season conference wins, at 94 since 1938. They also have four national championship wins, which puts them in seventh place. The city has also had four Hall of Fame coaches, tying them with Los Angeles,” the WalletHub study said.
With a score of 57.19, Philly trails only Los Angeles (58.55) as the top city for college basketball fans.
WalletHub compiled its ranking on more than 290 cities, using nine key metrics, including the number of teams per city and its winning percentage. Other metrics include stadium capacity, social media engagement, and more.
