The CEO of Rap Snacks has launched a new potato chip brand that pays homage to Black food innovators, writes Delano Massey for AXIOS Philadelphia.
James Lindsay, a Philadelphia native, has launched Crum chips. The new chip brand is a tribute to George Crum, the Black chef who is credited for creating the potato chip.
The new potato chips are set to become available later this year. Starting out, the two flavors will be original and cheese, onion and chives, respectively.
Despite people like Crum helping shape industries, many like him have been virtually erased from history.
Lindsay’s goal is to ensure that Crum gets the credit he deserves for his popular invention.
During the mid-19th century, Crum was working as a chef at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York.
A customer who continuously complained about thick, soggy fried potatoes caused Crum to come up to the idea of slicing them extremely thin. He then fried them until they were crispy, and seasoned them with salt.
From there, the potato chip was born and food history was changed forever.
“If Crum hadn’t gotten frustrated that evening in Saratoga and sliced those potatoes paper-thin, we may not have chips,” Lindsay said.
