With the Market Street Bridge now 93 years old, there is serious work that needs to be done on it and starting very soon, that’s exactly what is going to happen, writes Mike DeNardo for KYW Newsradio.
Beginning on Monday, March 17, PennDOT will embark on a $149 million long-term project to rehabilitate the bridge.
“It’s in poor condition. It needs our attention in order to continue its service life,” said PennDOT spokesperson Brad Rudolph.
In the initial phase of the project, some daytime lane closures near 30th Street Station will occur. This will be for crew members to relocate utility lanes.
However, late next year no cars will be allowed to go onto the bridge.
Rudolph said the Market Street Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic for about a 14-month period.
Strategically, that closure won’t take place until August 2026, after which the city will have concluded its semiquincentennial event celebrations. From there, it will remain closed through October 2027.
While the closure will cause some inconveniences, PennDOT, the City, Amtrak, and local area businesses will continue working together to help mitigate the impact of the inconveniences.
