University of Pennsylvania Removes ‘Interim’ Tag As Larry Jameson Becomes School’s 10th President

Larry Jameson has been named the University of Pennsylvania's 10th president in the school's history, through at least 2027.

After a 15-month tenure in an interim role, the University of Pennsylvania has officially named Larry Jameson as the university’s 10th president, writes Zion Abebe for The Daily Pennsylvanian.

Penn announced that Jameson’s presidency role has been extended through June 30, 2027.

He had been in the interim role since the resignation of former Penn President Liz Magill, who stepped down as national controversy surrounded the university’s response to alleged antisemitism on campus.

“I am deeply honored by this vote of confidence from our Board of Trustees. I look forward to continuing the vital work of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to uphold Penn’s mission of utilizing knowledge for the greater good,” Jameson said of the appointment.

Penn’s Board of Trustees Chair Ramanan Raghavendran noted that amid the various challenges facing higher education today, leadership is the most important thing.

Furthermore, the continuity of allowing Jameson to continue in his role was another step toward addressing some of these challenges.

Since becoming interim president, Jameson has implemented a number of changes to the university’s policies and practices as it pertains to campus unrest and both local and national levels of scrutiny.
