King of Prussia Mall Nears Deal to Transform Vacant JCPenney into New Experiences

King of Prussia Mall is finalizing plans to revamp the former JCPenney space with exciting new experiences.

Big changes are on the horizon for King of Prussia Mall as it moves closer to filling the long-vacant former JCPenney space, Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

General Manager Bob Hart shared that new retail and entertainment concepts are in the works, with an official announcement expected this summer.

“This is going to happen,” Hart said at a recent Philadelphia Business Journal event, emphasizing that the project is progressing through necessary approvals.

The 104,065-square-foot space has been empty since JCPenney closed in 2017. Over the years, the mall owner, Simon Property Group, has explored multiple redevelopment ideas, from office buildings and residences to a hotel and a park. The most recent plan—a flagship Wayfair store with a café and rooftop bar—fell through in 2023.

Entertainment has become a major focus at the mall. Netflix is set to open its massive experiential Netflix House in November, while Italian dining emporium Eataly will debut in September. Other additions include Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar, Camp’s immersive children’s experience, and new stores like Yeti, Moncler, and Abercrombie & Fitch.

While Simon has no immediate plans for a hotel or office space, Hart didn’t rule it out for the future.
