Inside Taller Puertorriqueño, a community-based cultural organization in Fairhill that serves to preserve, develop, and promote Puerto Rican arts and culture, you can find much more.
Namely, Julia De Burgos Bookstore, which serves as an avenue of support and representation within the local Latino community, reports Nick Iadonisi for 6abc.
For many customers who come through the bookstore, they leave finding a further sense of belonging and a connection to their roots and culture.
“It’s really special to walk into a place where every single book is written by a Latine author,” said Lisa Moser, the bookstore manager at Taller Puertorriqueño. “It’s just very powerful.”
The books available at the bookstore span across numerous genres and for people of all ages. Several books are also bilingual for both English and Spanish speakers.
Erikka Goslin, deputy and interim executive director at Taller Puertorriqueño, highlighted that representation matters, and it’s important to “see ourselves reflected in the books that we read and reflected in the stories and experiences that we have.”
The proceeds made from the bookstore go directly to Taller Puertorriqueño, helping support and enhance its programming and community events throughout the city.
