Manayunk Chef Provides Food As Source of Medicine After Personal Health Challenge

Michael Suminski is the culinary director for LifeChef, where he helps provide dietary consultation for people with chronic illnesses.

Manayunk chef Michael Suminski has worked in restaurants throughout Philadelphia for several years and when the pandemic hit, everything changed, writes Gina Lizzo for Main Line Today.

For years, his goal was to find a place of his own.

In 2017, he opened James Restaurant & Bar. However, shortly after it started to make a profit, the pandemic hit and eventually led to the restaurant’s closure.

As a result, Suminski spent 18 months at home, began struggling with his weight, and realized he was missing nutrition within his diet.

Thankfully, his son Kai, was heavily involved with nutrition and fitness and helped him lose 70 pounds. Suminski later transitioned from restaurants to working at LifeChef, the meal delivery service that provides healthy pre-cooked meals for busy professionals.

Suminski is the brand’s culinary director, and focuses primarily on food as medicine for individuals who are suffering from chronic illnesses.

“We have the ability to intake patients—not customers—and give them dietary consultation, set up what they need, help them with monitoring along the way, and give them support,” Suminski said.

The goal is to lower the rates of cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and BMI, and reduce hospital readmissions.
