Patrick McGonigal, a member of Drexel University’s board of trustees, has donated $3.5 million to support the renovation and expansion of its Academic Resource Center, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
“Drexel’s unique experiential education model is the future of higher education, so I’m honored to be able to support it and the many students who will benefit from pursuing a Drexel education,” he said.
McGonigal previously donated $1 million to help open the university’s center and has since contributed an additional $2.5 million, becoming its namesake.
A Drexel graduate, McGonigal began his career in accounting and the healthcare industry before founding Atlanta-based iHealth Technologies in 2001. He sold the medical payment company to Goldman Sachs in 2006. iHealth Technologies then later merged with Connolly in 2014 and eventually became Cotiviti. Today, McGonigal is a private investor who focuses on early-stage companies.
Located in Drexel’s Korman Center, the Academic Resource Center provides tutoring, academic advising, specialized courses, along with a wide range of student support services.
Thanks to McGonigal’s gift, the university will be able to transform 5,500 square feet of space in the Korman Center into a section of the Academic Resource Center dedicated to STEM students.
