Now Under New Ownership, Di Bruno Bros is Eyeing Expansion Throughout Philadelphia

Di Bruno Bros, which has been a Philadelphia staple now for 85 years, is under new ownership and looking to expand tri-fold within the next decade.

Di Bruno Bros is now under the ownership of Brown’s Super Stores, who wants to maintain the local charm of the South Philadelphia-born specialty grocer, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

While doing so, Brown’s also plans to grow Di Bruno’s physical footprint throughout the region over the next decade. Its goal is to open another 12 to 15 stores in that time.

If accomplished within that higher end of that range, Di Bruno’s would triple its existing five-store footprint.

Over its 85-year history, Di Bruno has become one of the most recognizable and venerable brands in Philadelphia’s food scene. It is especially known for its high-end Italian imports, array of cheeses and charcuterie, and gourmet gift boxes.

Since being acquired, Brown’s has worked to invest in its existing stores and wants to return the business to profitability before pursuing retail expansion.

Brown’s have also begun investing in the infrastructure of its five retail locations, which include adding more meat, seafood, produce, and made-to-order sandwiches in each store.

Paul Brauer, president and COO of Brown’s Super Stores, emphasized that the changes won’t impact Di Bruno’s most popular products.

“It’s just trying to give a great experience, but not touch cheese and charcuterie and the special vibe that’s here,” he said.

For a deeper look at Brown’s vision, Di Bruno’s expansion strategy, and what it all means for Philly’s food lovers, read the full story in the Philadelphia Business Journal.
