Toughkenamon Pilots Aid Emergency Relief Efforts in North Carolina

A group of local pilots took off from New Garden Flying Field in Toughkenamon last week and headed to North Carolina to help those who have lost everything in the hurricane, writes Briana Smith for 6abc.

“Seeing the devastation down in North Carolina is so heartbreaking,” said Jonathan Martin, the aviation director at New Garden Flying Field. “So anything we can do, whatever we can, we’re happy to do it.”

Martin and six other pilots flew to Raleigh, where they dropped off donations to the the many residents that were affected by Hurricane Helene.

“They’re just so welcoming down there,” said Martin. “So happy that we’re doing this, grateful.”

The group received enough donations to fill up the back room right up to the ceiling.

“It was incredible how many people in a small town can support such a big community,” said Alyssa Martin who volunteered to sort the donated items including toiletries, canned goods, cleaning supplies, pet food, and much more.

“I think everybody pulls together and gets together, and that’s what’s important; bring the country together,” said Charlie Graef, a pilot from Wilmington.
