Harriett’s Bookshop has been working hard on fundraising efforts to help a group of 10 Philadelphia students take a life-changing trip to Paris, writes Wakisha Bailey for CBS News Philadelphia.
The 10 students are all scholars from YESPhilly Accelerated High School.
In the lead-up to the trip, instructor Barbara Eubanks of Going Global with Barbara, has been working with the students to help travel them for the travel.
“All things Paris. All things travel skills, Black history with Paris, importance of studying abroad and preparation for our trip in November,” Eubanks said.
To go on the trip, each student must raise $5,000 by November 1.
A fundraising campaign is being spearheaded by Harriett’s Bookshop owner Jeannine Cook, who has traveled to more than 15 countries to teach inner-city youth.
“Society tends to say we don’t really want to deal with them. They’re the other. They’re the bad kids,” said Cook.
She instead sees these teens as warriors, fighting the stigma of assumed stereotypes.
As of this writing, the students are about halfway to their goal.
The hope is that the students will be able to raise the $50,000 to spend the Thanksgiving holiday in France.
