It was announced in early September that Okaloosa County, Florida, had signed an agreement to acquire the SS United States.
The plan was to move the historic ocean liner and move it, sink it to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, and potentially turn it into the world’s largest artificial reef in Destin-Fort Walton Beach.
However, that plan has hit a snag, writes the 6abc digital staff.
The Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners were scheduled to review the proposal on September 3, however County Administrator John Hofstad said there was a “wrinkle with pier operators.”
Hofstad has since requested the vote be postponed until September 17 to allow “time to work out the issues.”
Earlier this year, the SS United States was court-ordered to move out of the South Philadelphia pier that it has been for nearly 30 years.
It was ordered to leave its berth by September 12.
At the moment, it’s unclear how the deadline will impact the delayed vote.
