Bucks County Playhouse has expanded its commitment to the New Hope community with the acquisition of the historic Umpleby House, a 191-year-old bed and breakfast, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.  

The theater purchased the property at 111 W. Bridge St. for $1.65 million on July 18, according to Executive Director Nicole Hackmann. 

The purchase of the 4,000-square-foot Umpleby House, which features eight bedrooms and a two-story carriage house, will serve as housing for artists performing at the Playhouse.  

This acquisition is expected to significantly reduce the theater’s annual rental costs for artist accommodations, providing a financial boost to the nonprofit. 

“Owning and maintaining property within the community strengthens our ties to New Hope and benefits the local economy,” Hackmann said. 

The Umpleby House, built in 1833, has a rich history, including serving as a campsite for George Washington’s soldiers in 1776.  

The property, now housing the cast of “Grease,” marks a new chapter as part of the Bucks County Playhouse family.
