Comcast has a leg up over other cable providers while major mobile carriers are competing in the internet market, according to a new S&P Global report, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
While the cable industry has lost many customers to wireless carriers that have invested in fixed wireless access service, S&P reports that Comcast is better positioned than its competing cable providers “to benefit from their wholesale wireless agreement with Verizon and its high-quality network.”
Chris Mooney, S&P Global Rating analyst, highlighted that smaller cable competitors don’t have the same resources to develop strong wireless service.
To keep up with the likes of Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T, cable companies such as Comcast are combining their wireless offerings with in-home broadband and picking up some postpaid mobile wireless customers, the report noted.
While the report also noted that the trade-off is unfavorable because of the high in-home broadband margins and modest mobile wireless margins, it found that Comcast may be an outlier in that regard.
Comcast has been shedding broadband subscribers, but gaining in other areas. It recently announced its new no-contract, no-free, month-to-month services NOW Mobile and NOW Internet.
Spokesperson Jennifer Bilotta said the latest in the company’s offerings to provide “something for every consumer segment of the market.”
