Society Hill Hotel, the 192-year-old hotel in Old City is aiming to reopen just in time for Mother’s Day, writes Kristen Hunt for PhillyVoice.
If successful, it will mark the end of a nearly year-long process of renovations, surprises, and snags as it has tried to transform the charred old building into a boutique destination.
“We do seem to be having set backs with construction that may push that day back,” Renee Rowlett, the hotel’s general manager and executive chef, said. “Fingers Crossed all goes according to plan! I still need to hire a staff and finalize the menu.”
Mike Cangi and Brian Linton bought the property for $2.3 million last year, after the hotel was shuttered and damaged from a fire in 2021.
The pair also founded United by Blue, a sustainable clothing brand.
In purchasing the property, they envisioned a high-end hotel with a cafe and whiskey bar that would preserved some of the building’s long history.
While the original open date was planned for January or February 2024, the timeline was shifted due to the crew discovering hidden tunnels and leaking walls.
According to Rowlett, the leaks have since been fixed.
