The Wistar Institute recently launched its newest initiative, the Center for Advanced Therapeutics, further aligning with Philadelphia’s growing life sciences sector and further expanding Wistar’s footprint into early-stage drug recovery, the Wistar Institute writes for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The one-of-a-kind program is being spearheaded by the organization’s CEO, Dr. Dario Altieri.
He said the program is part of the organization’s long and proud tradition in biomedical research of staying true to its core value of unfettered scientific discovery.
The goal is for the program to be “an engine for scientific innovation, broad collaboration across disparate disciplines and value creation for public-private partnerships,” said Altieri.
With the Philadelphia region’s status as an innovation hub, there is no better time than now to make that vision a reality.
The many lessons drawn from the COVID-19 pandemic, such as how science and innovation can transform the world of medicine in record time, is a prime example as to why.
“We proved it could be done, safely and effectively, in a little over a year,” Altieri said of the vaccine. “For us, these are the lessons that will drive our new Center for Advanced Therapeutics. Pursue the difficult targets, drug the undruggable, challenge dogmas and think out of the box.”
