Wayne Simmonds, who played the bulk of his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers, has announced his retirement from the sport, writes Kevin Kurz for The Athletic.
Simmonds spent 15 seasons in the NHL, playing 584 games out of a career 1,037 with the Flyers from 2011 to 2019.
“Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling and it’s one that I’m truly proud of,” Simmonds said in a statement. “The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard.”
In connection to this, Simmonds will sign a one-day contract with the Flyers, and the team has announced that it will celebrate his career during a ceremony on Saturday, April 13 at the Wells Fargo Center.
Flyers general manager, Daniel Brière spent two seasons playing with Simmonds in Philadelphia.
“He was an excellent teammate, a leader in the locker room and a class act for the Philadelphia community. He had such passion for this city and team that it was an honor to witness it all and play alongside him,” Brière said.
