See Which Startups Are the Most Promising Early-stage Tech Companies in Philadelphia

Despite being a slower year for venture capital deals and an uptick in layoffs in Philadelphia, a number of young startups have made their mark, writes Sarah Huffman for Technical.ly.

Technical.ly published its latest RealLIST Startups ranking that recognizes 10 local companies that have recorded significant growth over the last year and now seem poised to continue on this path.

The top spot went to Cira Centre-based BlueWhale Bio. The University of Pennsylvania spinout is working on technology aimed at increasing the accessibility of cell and gene therapies for patients. The company was co-founded by celebrated oncologist and researcher Carl June who won the 2024 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences last year.

Next on the list is 1to1, a personalization engine for ecommerce vendors. The company was co-founded in 2022 by Rittenhouse Square-based Pratik Desai, who previously worked as Salesforce’s personalization engine practice lead. Its platform, Regana, utilizes AI to customize content for consumers.

The top three is rounded out by Baleena, founded in 2022 by Sarah Beth Gleeson, Julia Yan, and Shoshana Weintraub, all University of Pennsylvania students. The company is currently working on a washing machine device that filters microplastics out of water.
