Philadelphia School Board VP Mallory Fix-Lopez To Resign, Effective April 18

Mallory Fix-Lopez is resigning from the school board in April after 6 years of service. She credits her young chlldren's schooling and a pending medical procedure among her reasonings.

Mallory Fix-Lopez, Vice President of the Philadelphia Board of Education, has announced she is resigning next month, writes Mike DeNardo for Audacy.

She noted that her decision was based on having two young children in school and a medical procedure soon.

“When I started this, I had one child that was 3 years old. Now I have two that are 8 and 4. Both of them will be in school this fall and I really want to be deeply committed to their school and engaged,” said Fix-Lopez. “When I really thought about that much more deeply, over the past couple of weeks in particular, I had to be honest with myself that I don’t have four more full years.”

Fix-Lopez has been a member of the school board since 2018, when the district returned to local control. She also teaches at the Community College of Philadelphia

Her accomplishments on the board include the expansion of multilingual services, a renewed board focus on academic achievement, and a policy in support of trans and nonbinary students.

“I feel like I really helped set things in motion for the next board to carry through and to bring their own ideas and new lenses to it,” Fix-Lopez noted.
