Liz Grothe is the mastermind behind Manayunk’s Couch Cafe and in her time in Philadelphia’s dining scene, she’s come to the realization that some of the best meals are the ones that are fun and sometimes even silly, writes Kae Lani Palmisano for Philadelphia Magazine.
Grothe finds inspiration from a variety of pop culture references or inside jokes that she finds amusing, which helps guide the creativity she utilizes from her cuisine.
She started cooking as a teenager alongside her mother, and once she started, she immediately fell in love with it.
“It became an obsession of mine,” said Liz Grothe.
Her career trajectory has gone from industrial safety in the cheesesteak-making industry to working in kitchens.
If Grothe had to describe her culinary style, it would be “seriously unserious.”
While she takes her cooking and professionalism very seriously, she doesn’t always take her food as seriously.
“Not all my pride is put into how thoughtful a dish I can make,” she said. “To me, as a diner, I don’t think that’s ever elevated my experience. I just think it’s really fun eating.”
The fun aspect that she exudes is what makes her Couch Cafe a Philadelphia dining favorite.
