Since 1966, Koch’s Deli has been a staple of University City, but after 57 years in operation, it will be relocating, writes John Paul Titlow for Phillyvoice.
Sometime next year, Koch’s Deli will officially move from its 43rd and Spruce streets location and open its doors at 6th and Market streets.
Over its 50-plus years, Koch’s Deli became known for its cold cuts and stacked sandwiches.
It was operated by husband-and-wife founders Sid and Fran Koch before their sons Lou and Bob Koch eventually took over.
After the 2005 death of Bob Koch, the deli changed ownership.
However, it remained relatively unchanged until very recently.
In November, the Philadelphia Department of Health ordered Koch’s Deli to close due to several health code violations found during a routine inspection by city officials.
This included inadequate refrigeration of food items, unclean surfaces, issues with equipment used to cook meat, and rodent activity.
Ultimately, Koch’s Deli had to cease operations until a fine was paid and the Health Department reapproved it after a follow-up inspection.
Its relocation presumably means those issues have been addressed and will be added to the strip of commercial spaces just about a block from Independence Mall.
