Red Owl Tavern Brings Back ‘Month of 1,000 Pies’ Initiative to Help Philabundance Fight Hunger

Red Owl Tavern will be selling pies all month, and half of the proceeds will go to Philabundance.

Red Owl Tavern is bringing back its “Month of 1,000 Pies” initiative in continuation of a seven-year tradition, writes Ali Mohsen for Billy Penn at WHYY.

Each November, the Old City restaurant and bar sells pies where half of the proceeds go toward helping benefit Philabundance in its fight against hunger.

At other times of the year, however, pies aren’t a featured item on the menu.

“During Thanksgiving time, pies are a big hit. So, this is the way where we can sell pies, make some guests happy, and also donate to charity,” said Erik Travers, director of restaurants, bars, and events at Kimpton Hotels.

This year, Red Owl Tavern is switching it up from the usual duo of pumpkin and apple pies, to coconut custard and sweet potato pies.

During the program’s first year in 2016, Red Owl sold about 100 pies. That number has slowly grown each year, with this year’s goal at 132.

Beyond the program, Red Owl also collaborates with Philabundance by granting internships to its culinary programs.

“We’re just excited to give back. That’s one of the things that we really truly believe in,” said Travers.
