Donovan Dixon is among 32 students nationwide who have been selected as a Rhodes Scholar, writes Chanel Hill for The Philadelphia Tribune.
A lot of prestige goes into being a Rhodes Scholar, and Dixon does not take it lightly.
“This distinction isn’t about being extremely smart of an extremely unique person. It’s about becoming a vehicle for positive change in my community and utilizing each day to give a voice to the hardship that Philadelphians experience and to fight to ensure a better future for people in this city and across the world,” he said.
Dixon is a recent graduate of New York University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy.
Beginning next fall, he will study at the University of Oxford in England, where he will pursue a master’s degree in philosophy and comparative social policy.
A Philadelphia native, Dixon’s passion for public policy is a result of his upbringing, as his family’s financial troubles forced them to get evicted from their home in 2015.
“Since then, I’ve been trying to figure out ways that I can give back to people who are in similar or worse situations,” said Dixon.
His time at Oxford will help him get closer to that mission.
