The popular Arctic Scoop, located on Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia, stands out among the many ice cream shops in Philadelphia by offering unique Asian flavors and huge portions, writes Wendy Daughenbaugh for 6abc.

While you can also get the classic ice cream flavors such as vanilla and chocolate, Arctic Scoop also offers lychee rose ice cream and sesame butter, as well as a mocha chip that tastes like Vietnamese coffee.

“We purposefully paid more for the chunks of dark chocolate chip,” said co-owner Alex Wu.

One of the favorites among the locals is the bright purple ice cream that is made using a mix of taro and ube sweet potatoes.

The shop was opened by three childhood friends from New York City in 2018. They chose East Passyunk as it reminded them of New York City’s Little Italy neighborhood.

The ice cream is made from scratch daily by Wu and Chris Cheang, a co-owner, in a kitchen a few blocks away. The Thai coconut bowl – a real coconut, with a sticky rice level topped with a scoop and toppings of your choice – is one of their signature desserts.
