Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia has been revealed as the most popular abandoned building in the world.

A couple months ago, unoccupied house insurance experts at Alan Boswell Group released its list of the most famous and popular abandoned buildings across the world, and a Philadelphia building is atop the list, writes Stacey Leasca for Travel + Leisure.

That building is the Eastern State Penitentiary in Fairmount, often described as America’s most historic prison.

“The prison, which closed in the 1970s, was considered unique in its treatment of inmates that were subjected to confinement in solitude with labor,” the team explained.

Tourists are now able to experience life inside the former prison through guided or audio tours. They can also get to know more about notorious inmates like Al Capone.

The team compiled the list by analyzing the 916,000 social media posts and mentions of #abandonedbuilding. They then cross-referenced it with the most popularly tagged and mentioned individual buildings.

Eastern State Penitentiary had the most with 204,000 social mentions.

It obliterated the rest of the list, as the second place Beelitz-Heilstätten Hospital in Germany clocked in with 54,000 posts.

The top 10 list was evenly split between buildings in the United States and abroad.
