The Phillies are seeking to get trademarking rights to one of its most commonly used phrases, especially during home games.

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking to trademark the phrase, “Ring the bell,” writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The phrase is commonly used and is a reference to the celebratory ringing of the Liberty Bell replica at Citizens Bank Park after every Phillies home run and victory.

The Phillies filed two applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, stating that the team is seeking use of the phrase on clothing — primarily headwear and shirts — and for entertainment services. The latter includes baseball games, contests and sweepstakes, newsletters, podcasts, community events, sports camps and clinics, and various forms of entertainment.

The “ring the bell” phrase has been synonymous with the Phillies brand since 2017. Since then, it has been used in a wide range of Phillies marketing tactics. This includes digital, print, television, and billboard campaigns, and merchandise.

“Given our past and continued use of the mark, we decided to register it,” said Michael Harris, Phillies vice president of marketing and new media.

The Phillies previously filed a trademark application for exclusive rights to “Bedlam at the Bank” in March 2023. The application has moved to the final stage of registration.
