Villanova University recently announced a significant donation of $11 million, reports Justin Heinze for the Patch.

The donation is meant to enhance various academic programs and facilities. These include the College of Professional Studies, the Italian Studies department, and the new Falvey Library at Vic Maggitti Hall. 

This generous gift comes from the late Bernard John Lucci. Lucci actively engaged with the university in his later years through its senior citizen enrichment program, taking a total of ten classes focused on Italian culture and language.

Jeffersonville resident Lucci developed a strong connection to Villanova after beginning his studies in 2005, reflecting his family’s Italian heritage. He passed away at the age of 86 in 2023.

Villanova President Peter M. Donohue praised Lucci’s example, noting the profound impact of his life and contributions. “Mr. Lucci’s restless pursuit of knowledge and humble generosity stand as a remarkable example to us all,” he said.

The decision to allocate the donation to specific programs was influenced by Lucci’s interests and ties to the university. Notably, a significant portion of the funds, $5 million, will benefit the College of Professional Studies, leading to the renaming of the senior enrichment program in his honor as the John Lucci Senior Citizen Personal Enrichment Program. 

Additionally, the donation has established an endowed chair in the Italian Studies program, further commemorating Lucci’s dedication to education. A special space dedicated to graduate and doctoral students will also be created within the new library, envisioning it as a central hub for academic collaboration.
