For Program Director Mars Sharrock, Inclusivity at The Wardrobe Nonprofit is a Must
Since Mars Sharrock joined The Wardrobe five years ago, their main goal has been to grow inclusivity for underserved communities, such as those who identify as LGBTQ+, writes Lisa Dukart for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Their work has been largely successful. The Philadelphia-based nonprofit is now projected to assist almost 600 clothing-insecure individuals from the LGBTQ+ community by June 30, the end of its current fiscal year. That represents a 25 percent increase over last year and follows 50 percent growth from 2022 to 2023.
Sharrock, who is the organization’s program director, does not plan to slow down their efforts to increase inclusivity, in both clients and staff at The Wardrobe.
The nonprofit that works with those in need of free clothing was founded in 1995 with a focus on professional attire for women. The Wardrobe has since expanded to serve all genders and provide clothing to fill a wide variety of needs.
Under Sharrock, who was the organization’s first transgender hire, inclusivity has become an even greater focus.
“They were dedicated to serving the LGBT communities before that, but weren’t quite sure how, and I think having a trans person on staff has really made a difference,” Sharrock said.
