A Recreation of Philly’s LOVE Park Opens in Sweden, Reigniting Its Skateboarding Past
The city of Malmö, in Sweden, now has a piece of Philadelphia skateboarding history with it as it has recreated the old LOVE Park there, writes Nick Vadala for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Malmö city officials wrote in a statement that LOVE Malmö will serve as a “monument to skateboarding’s place in urban life.”
The new park is the result of a collaboration between skateboarding organizations Skate Philly and Skate Malmö, and uses granite slabs, ledges, and other features that were saved from the Philadelphia original.
The project dates back to 2017 when news broke that pieces of the original LOVE Park granite were being shipped to Sweden.
Skate Malmö coordinator Gustav Edén made efforts to ensure pieces were preserved.
LOVE Park was constructed in the 1960s and became a skateboarding mecca by the 1990s.
In 2001, it became an event location for the X Games and returned to Philly in 2002, bringing in a reported $80 million in revenue.
That same year, the city began enforcing a long-standing ban on skateboarding at the park.
Skateboarding’s draw diminished in the years before the original LOVE Park started to get demolished in 2016 to make way for its current, remodeled version in 2018.
Its skateboarding past has now been reignited, but in Sweden.
