West Philly Native Deesha Dyer Shares Inspirational Journey to the Obama White House in New Memoir
When West Philadelphia native Deesha Dyer looks back on her life journey, her path is one that never could have imagined for herself, writes Janelle Burrell for CBS News Philadelphia.
She is now sharing her story through her new memoir, “Undiplomatic: How My Attutide Created the Best Kind of Trouble.”
While she was a student at the Community College of Philadelphia, Dyer decided to apply for the White House internship.
“I looked at it like, ‘I’m probably not qualified for this,’” she remembered.
At the time, Dyer was 31 years old, juggling a full-time job, community college courses, and multiple side hustles.
To her surprise, Dyer beat out hundreds of applicants and landed a spot in the White House intern class of 2009.
The imposter syndrome she experienced was the catalyst for her new memoir.
“A lot of people struggle with it,” Dyer said. “For me, I felt that way the entire time at the White House. And so I’m like, I’m gonna be honest about it, and entertain people along the way.”
In the book, she talks about how she got noticed by Barack and Michelle Obama just by being herself.
Subsequently, she went on to land a full-time job with the Obamas, got promoted multiple times, and eventually became White House Social Secretary.
