The Philadelphia Housing Authority recently unveiled its plans for the initial phase of the sweeping redevelopment of Bartram Village in Southwest Philadelphia, which will include 64 units of mixed-income rental housing, writes Jake Blumgart for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

At its peak, the Bartram Village public housing site was home to 500 units constructed in barracks-style buildings for defense workers during World War II. The first phase of the new project will be implemented just south of that site. Townhouses, apartments, and amenities such as a community room and a playground will be constructed on a vacant lot.

“We are actually doing our first phase on an off-site property because the Housing Authority is working through relocation with existing residents and figuring out what makes sense in terms of relocation and phasing on the actual site,” said Lindsey Samsi, a senior developer with Pennrose, a national low-income housing developer partnering with PHA on the project.

The full development will have a total of 600 housing units, some of which will be available to own. There will also potentially be some commercial space for shops and eateries.

PHA has been planning the Bartram Village redevelopment for 6 years. The hope is to break ground by the end of the year.
