Chef Minoru Ogawa, who owns several Japanese restaurants in Washington D.C., is entering the Philadelphia market with a 23-course omakase in Old City, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal

Ogawa Sushi & Kappo opened its doors earlier this month.

The 1,500-square-foot, bi-level space offers a 12-seat omakase counter on the first floor to start, and plans are to open up the second floor in the spring.

It’s an omakase experience comprised of fish and almost exclusively sourced from Tokyo.

Ogawa Sushi & Kappo will serve 29 pieces of fish across the 23-course meal, priced at $200 per guest. While the type of fish served will vary, the experience will include cold appetizers, sashimi, a hot appetizer, roughly 15 pieces of nigiri sushi, miso soup and dessert.

Chef Owaga is a second-generation chef who trained under his father, a master sushi chef in Japan.

While most of his restaurants are in D.C., Ogawa isn’t a stranger to Philadelphia

For his first Philadelphia restaurant, Ogawa was approached by Ling Yang, who wanted to open an omakase restaurant in Philadelphia with him.

He later signed onto the project with Yang and her business partners. Future partnerships in Philly are likely on the horizon.
