Central High School Student Combats Hunger, Food Insecurity Through Her Student-Led Nonprofit, Feeding Philly
Despite only being a teenager, Samantha Sandhaus has managed to make a strong impact on the community, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
Currently a senior at Central High School in North Philadelphia, Sandhaus launched Feeding Philly when she was a sophomore.
The nonprofit has seen tremendous growth over the two years since its launch.
“We use mutual aid programs and educational workshops to address food waste and insecurity in our local Philadelphia schools and communities,” said Sandhaus.
The high schooler was motivated to take on this initiative because of her own personal experiences growing up.
While she always had food growing up, she still faced some challenges.
“I dealt with an eating disorder when I was younger… I have experienced the detrimental effects of malnutrition,” she said.
Those personal experiences led her on a mission to get others the nutrition needed to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
As Sandhaus and other founding members of Feeding Philly prepare to graduate, the hope is that the program continues to grow.
The goal is to help other students and young people foster lifelong commitments to making positive impacts within their communities.
