When Philadelphia natives Mark and Courtney Owens decided to move back to the region after spending a decade out of state, they found the perfect home for their family in a 1920s Colonial Revival home in Penn Valley, writes Vaishnavi Nayel Talawadekar for the Architectural Digest.

Since they found the style used by previous owners dated, they enlisted Brittany Hakimfar of Bryn Mawr-based Far Studio to help them renovate.

They soon realized that all six bathrooms were beyond redemption and decided to start fresh.

“They wanted the bathrooms to feel consistent with the old-world charm of the house, but with a contemporary Parisian twist,” said Hakimfar.

The plan was to have a dedicated bathroom for each member of the family. Hakimfar put light wood cabinets, marble surfaces, and clay tiles in Courtney’s bathroom, while Mark’s space was reimagined with dark tones and masculine accents.

Their one-year-old daughter Raegan got her own soft pink oasis featuring shiplap walls, penny-tiled floors, and gilded hardware.

The couple loved the new aesthetics, but it took time to adjust to it.

“I did not expect the primary bathrooms to feel so luxurious, and I suppose it was because of all the marble in both spaces,” said Courtney.
