Matt Cord, Longtime Philadelphia 76ers PA Announcer, Reveals Plan to Retire At End of Season

Matt Cord, who has serves the Sixers' PA announcer for 28 years, is retiring from the role at the end of the 2025-2026 season.

For nearly three decades, Matt Cord has served as the public address announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers.

This year will mark the end of an era, as Cord has announced that he will be retiring at the end of this season, writes Rob Tornoe for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I have always wanted to go out on top, and I believe I’m still on top,” Cord said. “I figured, why not now?”

Cord, 66, said he has been contemplating retirement for a while. However, it wasn’t until a recent talk with retired Sixers play-by-play announcer Marc Zumoff that he decided now was the time to make the decision.

With this being Cord’s final season as the team’s PA announcer, the Sixers have already announced plans to celebrate his decades-long career.

“Matt’s iconic voice helped define our game experience for generations of 76ers fans, and his unique style and presence narrated some of the best moments in franchise history,” the team said in a statement.

While he will be stepping down from his Sixers role, he plans to remain with WMMR for at least another two or three years.

Cord was named the successor to the late Pierre Robert, who passed away suddenly in October 2025.
