With the 2024 election in the rearview, Democrats eye future leaders of the party and Pennsylvania Governor is on the short list.

Pennsylvania Governor and Upper Dublin native Josh Shapiro is carving out a prominent role among Democratic Party leaders, writes Katie Glueck for the New York Times.

Recently, Shapiro addressed congregants at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, the spiritual home of Martin Luther King Jr., introducing himself as a leader deeply rooted in shared values.

On the campaign trail, Shapiro has been instrumental in supporting Democratic candidates. In Pennsylvania. His efforts helped Democrats maintain control of the Pennsylvania House, solidifying his leadership credentials. Nationally, Shapiro’s presence was sought after in pivotal states like New Hampshire. In North Carolina, he headlined fundraisers for newly elected Governor Josh Stein.

Shapiro’s leadership in Pennsylvania, a state critical to Democratic presidential victories, positions him as a potential 2028 contender. His alliance with other prominent Democrats, including Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer and California’s Gavin Newsom, further underscores his growing influence.

While Vice President Kamala Harris remains the presumptive heir to the party’s leadership, strategists like Donna Brazile anticipate a new generation of Democrats, led by figures like Shapiro, to shape the party’s direction. 

With his ability to connect across diverse constituencies and his track record of results, Shapiro’s star continues to rise. He has become a figure to watch as Democrats prepare for the challenges of 2026 and beyond.
