‘A Win-Win-Win’: GMercyU Partners with Geisinger on Employment and Loan Repayment Program
Gwynedd Mercy University and Geisinger are working together to offer the Geisinger Nursing Scholars Gateway Program, which provides eligible GMercyU nursing students up to $40,000 in loan repayments when they launch their careers at Geisinger.
GMercyU Bachelor of Science in Nursing or second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing students who apply and are selected for the Geisinger Nursing Scholars Gateway Program will receive up to $40,000 in student loan payments once they graduate from GMercyU, pass the nursing licensure exam, and begin a three-year full-time work commitment at an approved Geisinger location. The program also includes new graduate support through Geisinger’s evidence-based Nurse Residency Program and opportunities for career growth.
“We are excited to work with Geisinger to help address the critical need for more compassionate and highly skilled nurses here in the Commonwealth,” said Dr. Jane H. Tang, Dean of GMercyU’s Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing & Health Professions. “GMercyU’s reputation for preparing nurse leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs in the Mercy tradition is well known, and this innovative program provides a wonderful employment opportunity for our graduates that also includes student loan relief. It’s a win-win-win for our graduates, Geisinger, and the Commonwealth.”
If selected, students will transition into a full-time nursing role within the Geisinger system with a work commitment of three years at one of these locations:
- Geisinger Medical Center in Danville
- Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre
- Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton
Geisinger will repay the students’ loans on a monthly basis for as long as they remain employed as full-time nurses. Students who leave Geisinger before the three-year period is up will be responsible for paying any remaining student loan balance, but will not be required to repay any loan payments already made on their behalf.
For more than 60 years, Gwynedd Mercy University has been a leader in preparing highly skilled nurses who are experts at providing compassionate care in our diverse society. To continue to meet the urgent need for nursing and other healthcare professionals, GMercyU will open the new Frances M. Maguire ’55 Healthcare Innovation Center in 2025. This new 63,000-square-foot space will feature state-of-the-market technology and spaces to support interprofessional learning, a best practice in healthcare. Here, nursing students will work alongside students from other majors, including Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Care, Speech Language Pathology, and more.
