The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) has announced a series of special programs and events beginning December 26 to celebrate Kwanzaa, a Pan-African and African American holiday, which is rooted in cultural traditions and practices that uplift principles of family and community.

During the week-long celebration, December 26 through January 1, AAMP will offer in-person and virtual, family-friendly activities that recognize and honor the seven principles of Kwanzaa, also known as “Nguzo Saba” in Swahili: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

“At the African American Museum in Philadelphia, we take great pride in providing high-quality, engaging programming that brings to life history, art, and culture for visitors of all ages,” said Dr. Ashley Jordan, President and CEO of the African American Museum in Philadelphia. “This holiday season, we are honored to offer the museum as a welcoming space for community gathering, celebration, and deeper appreciation of the Black experience.”

Throughout the week, guests will be welcomed to participate in a resource fair, arts and crafts, music and dancing, celebrations, and interactive workshops that honor these principles. As one of the new events this year, AAMP will partner with the Free Library of Philadelphia and Philabundance to host a special Kwanzaa-inspired, hands-on cooking class. AAMP’s Museum Shop will also feature Kwanzaa-related clothing, goods, and items for guests to purchase and wear throughout the season.

Registration for each of AAMP’s Kwanzaa events is open to the public and pre-registration is encouraged. All events are free to attend.
