Hair salon and personal care services have both seen a significant rise in cost in the last handful of years.

The rising costs of color and other products, combined with the greater complexity of trending hairstyles, have resulted in significantly higher prices across Philadelphia’s hair salons, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to the Consumer Price Index, the cost of personal-care services has increased 27 percent since 2019.

In the Philadelphia area, a balayage treatment has risen from $193 in 2021 to $264 on average, while a partial highlight went up from $167 to $203 over the same period.

A routine appointment of highlights, hair treatment, haircut, and a blow-dry at high-end salons across the region comes with a price tag of between $400 and $500 before tip.

“Ten years ago, that would have been unheard of unless you were in New York or Miami,” said Salvatore Patane, owner of Le Reve Salon & Barber Shop in Cherry Hill.

For Sulimay’s Salon & Barber Shop CEO Tara Acosta estimated that the total cost of the average color-and-cut appointment has increased by $50 over the past few years.

More people coming in with aspirational screenshots of the hairs and celebrities and influencers have played a role in this.

Therefore, many are looking for ways to save money on haircuts and coloring.
