A Chester County mother’s life has been changed after having back surgery using brand-new technology, writes Stephanie Stahl and Brad Nau for CBS News Philadelphia.

Jefferson Health has been using new 3D technology for patients in need of spinal fusion. The innovative technology is being used to create personalized spinal implants in back surgeries.

For Renee Schreiner, 37, walking up steps used to be impossible.

“I felt this shooting pain through my back and my hip,” she said. “I could not speak, I was crying. It was excruciating.”

Schreiner had an old stress fracture that caused a spinal misalignment, leaving her in need of spinal fusion.

Dr. Srinivas Prasad performed the surgery and was the first neurosurgeon in Philadelphia to use a revolutionary device in surgery.

The custom spinal implant was made with a 3D printer. The spacers are custom-made for each patient as well, using their cat scans.

“So, when you put it in it fits like a glove,” Prasad said. “So, these really enable us to effect the goals of surgery better.”

Schreiner, who is a mother of two and resides in Exton, had surgery 6 months ago and has her quality of life back, enjoying activities with her children.
